二、 目标：
北美数字图书馆系统的目标

2、 促进北美社会各类信息高效、经济地传递；
3、 鼓励相互之间的合作，对北美研究及网络建设方面的投资施加影响；

5、 在对北美有重要战略意义的地区的知识的生产传递方面充当国际性的领导角色；

——这是现代图书馆或数字以及其他类型图书馆的基本原则。但也许在不久的将来，这原则会稍稍转变为：“开放的知识获得”是否可能到那时图书馆的价值并不体现在它的馆藏中，而是它的图书馆员，因此，重新引导馆员的视线，从数字图书馆向“数字图书馆员”的发展对这个专业的将来极为重要。
